Delta Backpackers is situated in Ayr which is about 80 klms south of Townsville.During March and April we need people to plant seed for melons and also plant cane. From April through October there is picking of squash, zucchini, melons, chili, cucumber, tomatos and more! Most work is paid hourly.

Queensland's 'Bruce Highway' is the Coastal Route stretching over 2000 Klms. from The Gold Coast in the South to Port Douglas in the States Tropical North. The busiest section is from The Gold Coast to Brisbane the State Capital, particularly in the morning and afternoon rush hours. If you are hiring a campervan you will find that the further north you travel the quieter it becomes, and the possibilities are there to become 'Travel Troppo'.

Taking a break every couple of hours or so is a sensible plan as there are some sections of the highway that can send you to sleep. One in particular is from Rockhampton to Sarina just south of Mackay that is almost 300 Klms of nothing. Trains travel daily from Brisbane to Rockhampton and vice versa. The long distance run from Brisbane to Cairns is serviced by The Sunlander and The Tilt Train, both making the journey twice a week.

Brisbane has a really excellent transport system for the visitor. The Railway Station at Roma Street is the departure point for trains servicing all of the inner and outer suburbs of Brisbane and the The Bus Transport is a travel alternative with similar frequency. City Cats operate from The City Centre to suburbs by The Brisbane River and Day Passes are available and valid for all 3 transport operations.

The Sunshine Coast from Caloundra in the south to Noosa Heads in the north is blessed with an abundance of beautiful golden beaches. Local Government has placed restrictions on building developments here that will not allow the high -rise constructions that have dominated the Gold Coast skyline. Caloundra is only a 1 hour drive from Brisbane so it is possible to make The Sunsine Coast coastal areas a comfortable daytrip.

The Hinterland areas of The Sunshine Coast are a welcoming contrast to the coastal strip. Eumundi, just west of Noosaville has one of the most colourful markets to be found anywhere and is open on Saturdays. Further afield are the towns of Montville and Maleny. The former being a centre for Arts and Crafts Galleries. Spectacular views of the entire Sunshine Coast can be seen on the journey between these two small towns.

A good many Backpackers take in Hervey Bay and Fraser Island as they travel up and down the Queensland Coastline. Fraser Island has it's natural charm, the local dingoes and beautiful freshwater lakes, as well as being the largest sand island in the world.Special permits are required for camping, and also entry by barge of 4 wheel drive vehicles to the island.

The mainland town of Hervey Bay is the premier Whale Watching centre on the east coast of Queensland. The Humpbacks journey up from southern latitudes and remain in the region from early August to mid October. Numerous operators provide trips into the bay to see these graceful creatures perform their amazing water acrobatics to the delight of the visitors.

Bundaberg is the Southermost access point to The Great Barrier Reef,and is home of the famous Bundaberg Rum and Ginger Beer. About one and a hours North by road are the twin towns of Agnes Waters and 1770 where Lt. James Cook made his first landing on the Queensland Coast.

A few Klms East of the city is Mon Repos Beach, the largest accessible Turtle Rookery on mainland Australia. The season extends from November through to March with the first hatchlings heading for the water around mid January.

Rockhampton is the Beef Capital of Australia and sits a few Klms inland from the coast on the Fitzroy River. With the lack of a coastal breeze this City can be uncomfortably hot in the summer months.

Just 48 Klms north east of the City is Great Keppell Island that can be visited by light aircraft from Rockhampton or by launch from nearby Rosslyn Bay. The local Capricorn Caves are a popular.

Mackay, is known as the Sugar Capital of Australia. The main port for the movement of coal from the the Central Queensland coal fields.

Tourism is increasing in this area and Brampton Island is just off the coast and is accessible by Ferry Operators from Mackay Marina.

The Whitsundays provide a unique opportunity for Backpackers to communicate with each other, as the town of Airlie Beach is where most of these accommodations are situated. A small town with a large number of visitors all year round, it is the Gateway to The Great Barrier Reef and The Whitsunday Islands. Numerous cruise companies operate from Abel Point Marina, and a large variety of options are available to Backpackers.

If you are looking for day trips to the different Islands as opposed to 2-3 day cruises it is probably a better idea to check out Fantasea Cruises at Shute Harbour, as they operate frequent ferry services to Long, Daydream and Hamilton Island all day long. This company also operates daily to Whitehaven Beach and their pontoon on The Great Barrier Reef. Bus services are available to Shute Harbour throughout the day.

Visitors to Queensland who are interested in diving, should take the opportunity to contact Prodive and arrange a trip to one of the worlds greatest wreck dives. Sunk in a cyclone in 1911, The SS Yongala remained undiscovered for 50 years. It lies only 12 nautical miles from the coast in 14 -28 metres of water.

This artificial reef is home to more varieties of coral than can be found on most natural reef systems.The wreck is alive with many different species of fish incuding Giant Gropers, Queenfish, Barracuda, Sea Snakes, Clownfish and the odd Turtle or two.Townsville is the departure point for this dive.

Day cruises available from Clump Point jetty to Beaver Cay, Dunk and other surrounding islands.Close by Wongaling Beach has a water taxi service to Dunk Island.

Cairns is the tropical capital of North Queensland. Day trips to Agincourt Reef are operated by the Quicksilver Ferries,and various companies provide diving and snorkelling expeditions.The Northern Suburbs all have their own beaches and are extremely popular with visitors. Palm Cove is a great spot that has Giant Melaluca Trees as a natural attraction. Yorkies Knob Boat Club is favourite for inexpensive dining. Regular marlin fishing trips can be joined at Marlin Marina, Marlin Jetty and Trinity Wharf. The Esplanade extending along the foreshore provides a pleasant walk to take in some of the local wildlife. The Reef Hotel Casino Complex is in the City Centre if you fancy a gamble. A trip on The Scenic Railway from Cairns to Kuranda is one of the most enjoyable experiences. The scenery is breathtaking as the train passes through The Barron Gorge and waterfalls. The markets at Kuranda are always busy and Aboriginal Arts and Crafts are abundant. A Skyrail Cableway trip to Kuranda is an alternative as well as the steep climb by road. The Atherton Tablelands can be covered in a long day trip if you also decide to include the Waterfall Circuit. An early morning or late afternoon arrival at Yungaburra will afford you the opportunity of seeing the unique Australian Duck Billed Platypus in it's natural surroundings. Early morning will also get you a huge inexpensive breakfast at The Gem Gallery Cafe. A visit to The Coffee Works with it's cafe and gift shop at Mareeba is also an interesting stop.

The drive from Cairns is spectacular as a large proportion of the trip is overlooking The Coral Sea. Hartley's Crocodile Farm is a place to visit just before you arrive at Port Douglas.

In town there is significant development in progress to improve and enhance tourism. The Lookout at Flagstaff Hill will give you great views over 4 Mile Beach and The Low Isles.

Surrounded by The McDowall Range, the township is small but has lots of visitors. A vehicular ferry operates from here to cross The Daintree River to access The Bloomfield Track and beyond.

As well as Arts and Crafts ,the township has a Timber Museum. Daintree River cruises give you the certainty of spotting a saltwater crocodile and some of the exotic birdlife in the area.

This small town is steeped in history, beginning with the 1770 landing of Captain James Cook and his party after their ship had been holed by a reef. The James Cook Museum can supply you with all the details.

Take a drive up Hopevale Road to The Endeavour Tourist Park and see The Endeavour Falls. If you like an early morning beer you can take a short drive south of the town and visit The Lions Den.

Lying 900 Klms west of Townsville, Mount Isa has one of the largest silver-lead mines in the world. Public tours can be arranged for both above and below ground mines. The Riversleigh Fossil Museum is an interesting visit.
