Brief History.

Endeavour River.

Cooktown was visited by Captain James Cook back in 1770. His Barque, 'The Endeavour' had been damaged after running aground on The Great Barrier Reef and he needed a spot to careen and repair it. On October 25th in 1873, the SS Leichardt landed on the shores of the Endeavour River. A government survey team and the new Gold Commissioner, with an escort of police alighted the ship, with 60 miners in tow. This official party was the result of the discovery of gold on the Palmer River in 1872.

Within 18 months the now designated 'Cook's Town' had timber and iron buildings stretching for 2 miles along both sides of Charlotte St. The history of Cooktown had begun. Subsequent years provided the town with what is now a wealth of historical interest for the visitor to this unique spot in the far north of Queensland.

A pleasant walk within easy distance are many of the historical buildings and monuments to the past. Natures Powerhouse and The James Cook Museum are two of the attractions on the 'must do' list of the visitor. See the old lighthouse that was built in England and shipped to Cooktown in 1885.

Views from the lookout are well worth the walk and several beaches are close enough to be accessable. The town has been opened up considerably to tourism since the new bitumen road has been completed, as in the past it was a 4 wheel drive adventure down the Bloomfield Track.

The Discovery Festival.

The Old Lighthouse at Grassy Hill Cooktown.

On The Queens Birthday Weekend in June every year The Discovery Festival is held over 3 days. The Cook Re-enactment is the main event and is held on Sunday afternoon. My Ezine article describes the weekends events in full.

For 50 years, the people of Cooktown have come together in June to celebrate this historic event by staging a fully costumed re-enactment of Cooks landing and his time spent in this tropical paradise with the local Bama (aboriginal people).
