A $7 million upgrade to The Whitsunday Coast Airport was also approved last year with preliminary works having commenced in October. The $7 million invested into the airport will see the runway extended, the terminal increased to 5 times its current size and equipment for international screening introduced. The joint project between the State Government and the Whitsundays Regional Council is expected to be completed by the end of this year.
With over a million visitors to The Whitsunday region every year the airport upgrade and refurbished main street should see an increase in flights and tourism to The Whitsundays region over the next few years.
Port of Airlie combined with the Whitsunday Coast Airport and main street upgrade will have a major impact on Airlie Beach, benefiting residents, business owners and visitors.
