Cyclone Yasi from The Airlie Beach Hotel.![]() ![]() At home at Shute Harbour winds were whipping up to 100Kph followed by the inevitable power cut so Liz and I decided that we would pop down to the Airlie Beach Hotel for the night. Photo was taken from hotel looking out over townside on arrival left. Same photo taken 15 mins later as storm clouds gather over Airlie Beach. ![]() ![]() Liz settling in with the Airlie Beach Hotel Guide for guests as the wind begins to gather pace outside. The night was spent watching live updates of Cyclone Yasi's approach to the Queensland Coast. We spent a comfortable night with hardly any noise from the storm penetrating our accommodation. ![]() ![]() Breakfast next morning at 7-00am in the company of State Emergency Service personnel who were also guests at the hotel overnight. Photo take on right is of the new Merridean Merina Complex which will be in operation in the not too distant future. ![]() ![]() The Airlie Beach foreshore looking out towards Coral Seas Resort with a yacht dragging anchor close to the beach. Winds whipping breakers to about a metre in height are an unusual sight in this part of the world. ![]() ![]() One would be forgiven in thinking that the canine by it's delicate demeanour in the foreground was the owner of the yacht in immediate danger of striking land. There are several outlets for dining along this stretch. ![]() In the centre of town by the Clocktower directly opposite the Old Post Office you will find The Village Cafe Restaurant and Bar. Nice spot for a breakfast or invite friends to a nice lunch. ![]() The Clock Tower is not quite Big Ben, it stands in the centre of Airlie directly opposite the walkway to The Lagoon and everyone who visits will remember the Clock Tower that stands very close to Airlie Beache's most popular drinking spot, Magnums. ![]() View looking up into the hills above Airlie Beach from The Sailing Club. |
